Collecting and levelling up the materia can be a lot of fun, and it gives players more options when deciding which characters to use because anyone can be a mage by equipping the right materia. I love the materia system used for combat, I don't understand why people complain about it because it's the more interesting magic system of any Final Fantasy game. The story, setting, characters, and gameplay combine to make a fun and memorable experience that's worth playing through multiple times.
This is a great classic game, my favorite of the Final Fantasies and one of my favorite games all around.
